If you are asking these questions, Photoshop is probably the wrong program for you. Photoshop Album Starter is free. It lets you organize pictures, resize, rotate, fix red eye, and print. Photoshop Elements 6 does almost everything that Photoshop does, and can be downloaded for $99. If you later upgrade to Photoshop, you get a $99 discount. Unless you are a professional photo editor or a fanatical amateur, Elements 6 will do what you want, and it is much easier to use. (Do not get an earlier version. Release 6 has a lot of features that were not in the earlier releases.)

The free alternative is a programme called the Gimp from www.gimp.org , it's just as good as Photoshop in my opinion. It's not easy to learn (similar to Photoshop) but it is worthwhile and for free you can dump it if yopu don't like it. Hope this helps.
You have echoed all what I have experienced. Now I use Picasa which is free, does what i need to do fine, although I would LOVE photoshop, but I get by with this fine and is very user friendly.
